Motion picture

A moving visual representation created by displaying a sequence of still images. The term can describe a film as a medium, a production, or an individual work.

Persistence of vision: A perceptual effect in which a visual impression briefly remains after its stimulus disappears. This effect was once used to explain why rapidly displayed frames appear continuous, though it is not a complete account.
Phenakistiscope: A nineteenth-century spinning disc that creates an illusion of movement from sequential drawings viewed through slits. It demonstrated how still images could suggest motion before photographic cinema.
Film frame: A single still image in a motion picture sequence. Frames are the discrete images whose ordered display produces apparent movement.
Documentary film: A nonfiction motion picture that represents people, events, or subjects as real. Documentary uses moving images to record, investigate, or interpret the world.
Hollywood: A district of Los Angeles that became the center of the American film industry. Its studios helped establish large-scale commercial production and global film distribution.
Frame rate: The number of images displayed or recorded per second. Frame rate helps determine the apparent smoothness and motion quality of a picture.
Zoetrope: A rotating cylinder with slits that presents sequential images as an apparent moving scene. Its repeated-image animation helped popularize pre-cinematic motion devices.
Film editing: The selection and arrangement of shots into a sequence. Editing creates continuity, pace, and relationships between images.
Animated film: A motion picture created by photographing or generating images that change incrementally. Animation creates apparent movement without requiring continuous photographic recording of live action.
Movie theater: A venue designed for public exhibition of motion pictures. Theater-going made film viewing a shared mass-cultural experience.
