Motorcycle suspension

Motorcycle suspension is the spring-and-damper system connecting a motorcycle’s wheels to its frame. It absorbs road irregularities, helps maintain tire contact, and controls chassis motion.

Coil spring: A helical spring that stores mechanical energy when compressed or extended. It supports the motorcycle and compresses as the wheel encounters a bump.
Spring rate: The force required to compress or extend a spring by a given distance. Spring rate determines how much the suspension yields under load.
Telescopic fork: A front suspension fork whose sliding tubes compress along their length. It is the standard front-suspension layout on most motorcycles.
Rigid frame: A vehicle frame with no suspension movement between its wheels and chassis. It lacks the wheel-to-frame springing and damping that define suspension.
Shock absorber: A device that dissipates mechanical energy to control spring motion. It damps repeated suspension movement after compression and rebound.
Preload: An initial compression applied to a spring before an external load is added. Preload adjusts sag and ride height without changing the spring’s rate.
Upside-down fork: A telescopic motorcycle fork with its larger outer tubes attached to the chassis. Its tube arrangement changes stiffness and unsprung mass distribution.
Motorcycle tire: A motorcycle’s pneumatic tire, providing grip, cushioning, and contact with the road. The tire contributes compliance but cannot replace suspension travel and damping.
Damping: The dissipation of energy that reduces oscillation in a moving system. Suspension damping controls how quickly the spring compresses and returns.
Sag: The amount a suspension compresses under a specified load from its fully extended position. Rider and motorcycle sag establish the suspension’s working position.
