Knowra Mount Kilimanjaro Mount Kilimanjaro Mount Kilimanjaro is a volcanic massif in northeastern Tanzania, rising to 5,895 meters above sea level. Its three volcanic cones and isolated position make it Africa’s highest mountain.
Kibo : Kibo is Kilimanjaro’s highest volcanic cone, containing the mountain’s summit and a large caldera. Its summit, Uhuru Peak, gives Kilimanjaro its maximum elevation.
Kilimanjaro glaciers : Kilimanjaro glaciers are small ice bodies concentrated near the mountain’s summit. Their retreat reflects changes in snowfall, humidity, and high-altitude climate.
Hans Meyer : Hans Meyer was a German geographer and mountaineer who reached Kilimanjaro’s summit in 1889. His expedition with Ludwig Purtscheller made the first documented ascent to Kibo’s summit.
Kilimanjaro climbing routes : Kilimanjaro climbing routes are established paths used to ascend the mountain’s summit region. Route choice affects ascent duration, acclimatization, and the terrain crossed.
Mawenzi : Mawenzi is Kilimanjaro’s rugged volcanic cone, east of Kibo and rising to 5,149 meters. It is one of the massif’s three principal volcanic centers.
Orographic precipitation : Orographic precipitation forms when moist air rises over elevated terrain, cools, and releases moisture. The mountain’s slopes force air upward, helping create distinct wet and dry zones.
Ludwig Purtscheller : Ludwig Purtscheller was an Austrian mountaineer who climbed Kilimanjaro with Hans Meyer in 1889. He shared the first documented summit ascent with Meyer.
Altitude sickness : Altitude sickness is illness caused by inadequate acclimatization to reduced oxygen pressure at elevation. Rapid ascent on Kilimanjaro can expose climbers to dangerous altitude-related illness.
Shira : Shira is the eroded remnant of Kilimanjaro’s oldest major volcanic cone, forming a broad western plateau. Its plateau preserves the oldest large-scale volcanic landscape on the massif.
Altitudinal zonation : Altitudinal zonation is the change in climate and ecosystems with increasing elevation. Kilimanjaro’s rapid rise creates sharply stacked ecological belts.
