Mount Kinabalu

Mount Kinabalu is a 4,095-meter mountain in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, and the highest peak in Malaysia. Its granite summit rises above tropical rainforest and supports distinctive high-altitude habitats.

Sabah: A Malaysian state occupying the northern part of Borneo. Kinabalu lies in Sabah, whose landscapes extend from the mountain to the coast.
Tectonic uplift: The upward movement of Earth’s crust caused by tectonic forces. Uplift raised the rocks that form Kinabalu above surrounding terrain.
Kinabalu Park: A protected area in Sabah established around Mount Kinabalu. The park protects the mountain and much of its surrounding biodiversity.
Biodiversity hotspot: A region with exceptional endemic species and substantial habitat loss. Kinabalu is renowned for high diversity and many species found nowhere else.
Borneo: An island in Southeast Asia shared by Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Kinabalu rises in the Malaysian portion of this island.
Pluton: A body of intrusive igneous rock crystallized from magma beneath Earth’s surface. Kinabalu’s granite crystallized underground as a large intrusive body.
Mountaineering: The sport and practice of climbing mountains. Climbing routes make Kinabalu a prominent mountaineering destination in Southeast Asia.
Endemism: The restriction of a species to a particular geographic area. Isolation and elevation have helped produce species endemic to Kinabalu and its surroundings.
Granite: A coarse-grained igneous rock composed chiefly of quartz and feldspar. Granite forms Kinabalu’s prominent summit mass.
Glacial landform: A feature of Earth’s surface created or reshaped by glacial ice. Pleistocene glaciers carved landforms near Kinabalu’s summit.
