Mount Kōya

Mount Kōya is a mountain complex in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, that became the headquarters of Shingon Buddhism and a major center of pilgrimage.

Kūkai: Kūkai was a Japanese Buddhist monk who founded the Shingon school and established its center at Mount Kōya. He founded the mountain’s monastic community in the early ninth century.

Okunoin: Okunoin is a cemetery and sacred precinct on Mount Kōya centered on Kūkai’s mausoleum. The site embodies the belief that Kūkai remains in meditative samadhi.
