Mount Ruapehu

Mount Ruapehu is an active stratovolcano in New Zealand’s North Island and the country’s highest point. Its slopes contain major ski areas, while its summit crater lake can drive hazardous eruptions and lahars.

Crater lake: A lake occupying a volcanic crater or caldera, sometimes altered by heat and volcanic gases. Ruapehu’s summit lake changes temperature and chemistry around eruptions.
1995–1996 Ruapehu eruptions: A sequence of explosive eruptions at Ruapehu that deposited ash across parts of New Zealand. These eruptions drained and later rebuilt the summit crater lake, producing major lahars.

Tūroa ski area: A ski area on the south-western slopes of Mount Ruapehu. Its high-altitude lifts and runs share the mountain’s volcanic and weather hazards.
Te Heuheu Tūkino IV: A paramount chief of Ngāti Tūwharetoa who helped secure the creation of Tongariro National Park. His 1887 gift of central North Island lands included Ruapehu and enabled the park’s establishment.
Volcanic eruption: The release of magma, gases, and other material from a volcano. Ruapehu’s activity includes explosive eruptions that disrupt its summit lake.
