Mount Shasta

Mount Shasta is a 14,179-foot stratovolcano in the Cascade Range of northern California. Its steep, snow-covered summit rises above the surrounding landscape and includes several overlapping volcanic cones.

Stratovolcano: A steep, cone-shaped volcano built from alternating layers of lava and fragmental volcanic material. Shasta’s overlapping cones and layered deposits give it this broad volcanic form.
Shastina: A large satellite volcanic cone on the western flank of Mount Shasta. This distinct cone is one of Shasta’s most prominent secondary peaks.
Mount Shasta Wilderness: A federally protected wilderness area surrounding much of Mount Shasta in northern California. The designation shapes access and conservation across the mountain’s high slopes.
Wintu: A group of Indigenous peoples whose traditional homelands include parts of northern California. Wintu communities have longstanding ties to the region around Mount Shasta.
Cascade Volcanic Arc: A chain of volcanoes formed above the Cascadia subduction zone in the Pacific Northwest. Shasta is one of the arc’s largest and southernmost major volcanoes.
Hotlum Glacier: A glacier on Mount Shasta’s northeast flank and the mountain’s largest glacier. Its ice illustrates how glaciers occupy Shasta’s high, shaded slopes.

Subduction: The descent of one tectonic plate beneath another into Earth’s mantle. Subduction beneath the Pacific Northwest supplies magma to the Cascade volcanoes, including Shasta.
Konwakiton Glacier: A glacier on Mount Shasta’s southeastern flank. It feeds streams descending the mountain’s southeastern side.
