Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon is the Virginia estate that was George Washington’s home and plantation. Its surviving mansion, outbuildings, gardens, and landscapes preserve evidence of plantation life and Washington’s household.

Mount Vernon mansion: The principal residence at Mount Vernon, expanded by George Washington into a two-and-a-half-story mansion. Its rooms and architecture formed the estate’s domestic center.
George Washington: The commander of the Continental Army and first president of the United States, who lived at Mount Vernon. He expanded, managed, and made the estate his principal home.
George Washington’s five farms: The five separately managed agricultural units into which Washington organized Mount Vernon. This system structured production across the estate’s land.

Mansion House Farm: The central farm unit at Mount Vernon, encompassing the mansion and nearby agricultural operations. It joined Washington’s residence to the estate’s working farms.
Lawrence Washington: George Washington’s elder half-brother, who inherited the family estate and named it Mount Vernon. His tenure established the estate’s name before George inherited it.
