Knowra Mount Whitney Mount Whitney Mount Whitney is a 14,505-foot peak in California’s Sierra Nevada and the highest summit in the contiguous United States. Its summit lies within Sequoia National Park, near the eastern boundary of the range.
Sierra Nevada : The Sierra Nevada is a mountain range in eastern California and western Nevada. Mount Whitney is its highest peak, near the range’s eastern edge.
Mount Whitney Trail : The Mount Whitney Trail is a maintained hiking route from Whitney Portal to Mount Whitney’s summit. It is the standard nontechnical route, gaining roughly 6,100 feet from the trailhead.
Sierra Nevada batholith : The Sierra Nevada batholith is a vast body of granitic rock formed from magma beneath ancient volcanoes. Its uplifted granitic rocks make up Mount Whitney.
Mount Elbert : Mount Elbert is a 14,440-foot peak in Colorado’s Sawatch Range and the highest summit in the Rocky Mountains. It is the highest Rocky Mountain summit, but lower than Whitney.

Mount Rainier : Mount Rainier is a 14,411-foot active volcano in Washington’s Cascade Range. Rainier is prominent and glaciated, but it is lower than Whitney.
Granite : Granite is a coarse-grained igneous rock formed when magma cools slowly underground. Granite forms much of the summit’s exposed rock.
Mount Whitney permits : Mount Whitney permits are quota-based authorizations required for hiking the main trail during the quota season. Daily quotas regulate access on the mountain’s most popular route.
