Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation

Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is rescue breathing in which a rescuer exhales into another person’s mouth to ventilate the lungs, often during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Rescue breathing: A first-aid method that provides ventilation to someone who is not breathing normally. Mouth-to-mouth is one way to deliver rescue breaths.
Basic life support: A set of emergency actions for maintaining breathing and circulation before advanced care arrives. Mouth-to-mouth can be taught as part of basic life support.
Pocket mask: A compact barrier device placed over the face to provide rescue breaths with reduced direct contact. It allows mouth-to-mask ventilation instead of direct mouth-to-mouth contact.
William Tossach: A Scottish physician who reported using expired-air ventilation to revive a miner in 1744. His report is an early documented account of mouth-to-mouth ventilation.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation: An emergency procedure combining chest compressions and, when appropriate, rescue breaths to support circulation and breathing. Mouth-to-mouth may supply the breathing component of CPR.
Drowning: Respiratory impairment caused by submersion or immersion in liquid. Rescue breaths are especially relevant when cardiac arrest follows a breathing-related emergency.
Face shield (resuscitation): A thin barrier used during rescue breathing to reduce direct contact between rescuer and recipient. It offers a simple barrier when a pocket mask is unavailable.
Peter Safar: An Austrian-born American physician who helped develop modern resuscitation and airway management. His research helped establish modern rescue breathing and CPR practices.
Pulmonary ventilation: The movement of air into and out of the lungs. Each rescue breath aims to produce ventilation without normal muscle effort.
Opioid overdose: A toxic reaction to opioids that can suppress breathing and cause death. Ventilation can address dangerously slow or absent breathing while emergency help is obtained.
