MPEG-4

MPEG-4 is an international family of standards for coding and delivering digital audiovisual content. It covers video, audio, graphics, and interactive media through separately defined parts.

MPEG-4 Part 2: A video-coding standard in MPEG-4 that includes the Simple and Advanced Simple Profiles. It is the part behind widely used early MPEG-4 video codecs such as DivX and Xvid.
Video compression: The reduction of video data by removing redundancy and, often, visually less important information. MPEG-4 video parts reduce the data needed to represent moving images.
DivX: A family of video codecs and software historically built around MPEG-4 Part 2 and later standards. DivX helped popularize Part 2 video playback on personal computers and consumer devices.
MPEG-2: A family of standards for digital video and audio, widely used in television broadcasting and DVD video. MPEG-2 preceded MPEG-4 and targets different coding and delivery requirements.
MPEG-4 Part 10: The formal name for Advanced Video Coding, a video-compression standard also known as H.264. This part brought MPEG-4 video coding to Blu-ray, streaming, and many other systems.
Audio compression: The reduction of audio data through lossless or lossy encoding techniques. MPEG-4 audio parts encode sound independently from video.
Xvid: An open-source video codec implementation of MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile. Xvid provided a prominent interoperable alternative to proprietary Part 2 codecs.
H.264: A video-coding standard jointly developed by ITU-T and ISO/IEC, identical to MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC. Its two names reveal how an MPEG part can also have a separate ITU-T designation.
MPEG-4 Part 3: The MPEG-4 standard part covering audio coding, including Advanced Audio Coding. It specifies audio tools that complement MPEG-4 video.
Object-based coding: A coding approach that represents a scene as separate visual or audio objects rather than one undivided stream. MPEG-4's original design allowed independently coded scene objects and their composition.
