Mu'allaqat

The Mu'allaqat are a group of celebrated pre-Islamic Arabic odes preserved as foundational works of Arabic poetry. Their long, formal qasida structure combines themes such as love, travel, tribal life, and praise.

Qasida: A long Arabic ode traditionally organized around a sequence of thematic sections and a single rhyme. The Mu'allaqat are celebrated examples of this established ode form.
Imru' al-Qais: A pre-Islamic Arab poet traditionally credited with one of the Mu'allaqat. His ode is renowned for its vivid opening and descriptions of love, travel, and landscape.
Hammad al-Rawiya: An eighth-century Kufan transmitter associated with collecting and teaching early Arabic poetry. Later accounts connect him with selecting and circulating the poems as a group.
