Muhammad Ahmad

Muhammad Ahmad (1844–1885), known as the Mahdi, was a Sudanese religious leader whose revolt overthrew Egyptian rule in Sudan and established a Mahdist state.

Anglo-Egyptian Sudan: The territory of Sudan under joint British and Egyptian administration from 1899 until independence in 1956. Egyptian rule before the revolt created the political order Ahmad sought to overthrow.
Mahdist War: The Sudanese uprising against Egyptian rule and subsequent British-Egyptian campaigns, fought from 1881 to 1899. Ahmad’s proclamation in 1881 initiated the uprising’s first phase.

Anglo-Egyptian conquest of Sudan: The military campaign that brought the Mahdist state to an end and established Anglo-Egyptian rule in Sudan in 1898–1899. It reversed Ahmad’s overthrow of Egyptian authority.
