Multiphase flow

Multiphase flow is the simultaneous movement of materials in two or more phases within a system. The phases interact and may form distinct patterns such as bubbles, droplets, or particle suspensions.

Interfacial tension: The force per unit length acting along an interface between two immiscible phases, arising from molecular interactions. It shapes bubbles and droplets and influences how phases deform and exchange momentum.
Continuum mechanics: The study of material motion and deformation using fields such as velocity, stress, and density. Multiphase-flow models often describe each phase as a continuous field.
Oil production: The extraction of crude oil from underground reservoirs and its delivery to the surface. Produced fluids commonly combine oil, water, and natural gas in wells and pipelines.
Homogeneous flow model: A model that assumes phases share a common velocity and often remain in local thermodynamic equilibrium. It simplifies multiphase flow by suppressing relative phase motion.
Void fraction: The fraction of a mixture’s volume occupied by its gas phase at a given location. It quantifies gas occupancy and helps distinguish flow regimes in gas–liquid systems.
Conservation of mass: The principle that mass is conserved in physical processes, except where sources or sinks are explicitly included. Each phase needs a mass balance that accounts for transport and interphase transfer.
Boiling: The rapid vaporization of a liquid throughout its bulk when vapor bubbles form and grow. Boiling creates coupled liquid–vapor flow that controls heat transfer and equipment limits.
Eulerian–Lagrangian method: A numerical approach that represents a carrier fluid on a grid and tracks dispersed entities individually. It contrasts with continuum descriptions that represent every phase as a field.
Flow regime: A characteristic spatial arrangement of phases in a flowing mixture, such as bubbly, slug, or annular flow. Regime changes reorganize phase distribution and strongly alter pressure drop and transport.
Navier–Stokes equations: Partial differential equations expressing conservation of momentum in fluid motion. They supply the momentum framework extended by many multiphase-flow models.
