Multiple rocket launcher

A multiple rocket launcher is an artillery system that fires several unguided rockets in rapid succession, usually from a vehicle-mounted launcher.

Rocket artillery: Artillery that delivers explosive payloads using rockets rather than gun-launched shells. Multiple rocket launchers are the principal modern systems used to deliver rocket artillery.
Katyusha rocket launcher: A Soviet multiple rocket launcher system used extensively during the Second World War. Katyusha became the best-known early example of a mobile, massed rocket barrage.
Self-propelled howitzer: A mobile artillery vehicle carrying a gun that fires shells along ballistic trajectories. Howitzers generally offer more precise, sustained fire than unguided rocket salvos.
Congreve rocket: A British military rocket developed in the early nineteenth century for bombardment. Congreve rockets were an early precedent for using rocket salvos as artillery.
Counter-battery fire: Artillery fire directed against enemy artillery positions. Salvo launchers face rapid retaliation when their firing position is detected.
Salvo: A coordinated discharge of multiple weapons or projectiles in a short interval. Firing a salvo concentrates many rockets on a target before it can respond.
BM-21 Grad: A Soviet 122 mm multiple rocket launcher introduced in the early 1960s. The Grad established a widely copied model of a truck-mounted launcher with many tubes.
Guided multiple launch rocket system: A rocket-launch system whose munitions use guidance to improve accuracy after launch. Guided ammunition narrows impact dispersion while retaining the launcher’s rapid strike capability.
William Congreve: A British artillery officer who developed military rockets used during the Napoleonic Wars. Congreve’s designs helped establish the military use of massed rocket fire.
Area denial: The use of weapons or obstacles to make an area difficult or dangerous to occupy or traverse. Large rocket salvos can make exposed areas hazardous without precisely selecting individual targets.
