Mungo Park

Mungo Park (1771–1806) was a Scottish surgeon and explorer who made two expeditions into West Africa. His journeys established much of the Niger River’s course for European geography.

Selkirkshire: A historic county in the Scottish Borders, where Mungo Park was born. Park grew up here before studying medicine and joining an African expedition.
First Mungo Park expedition: Park’s 1795–1797 journey from the Gambia River into the interior of West Africa. Park reached the Niger at Ségou and followed it downstream to Silla.
Amadi Fatouma: A West African guide and interpreter who accompanied Mungo Park’s second expedition along the Niger. His later testimony described events near the end of Park’s journey.
European exploration of Africa: European-led journeys into Africa undertaken for geographic, commercial, political, or scientific purposes. Park’s published journeys became prominent early examples of British inland exploration.
Heinrich Barth: A German scholar and explorer who travelled across the Sahara and West Africa in the 1850s. Barth’s later scholarship combined exploration with close study of African societies and histories.
University of Edinburgh: A Scottish university founded in 1583, known for its medical school and wider scholarship. Park studied medicine here before travelling to West Africa.
Ségou: A historic city on the Niger River in present-day Mali, once the capital of the Bambara Empire. Park reached Ségou in 1796 and saw the Niger flowing eastward.
Karimama: A ruler in the Niger region who encountered Mungo Park’s second expedition. Park’s account and the expedition’s records identify Karimama among local authorities along the route.
African geography: The study of Africa’s physical landscapes, climates, rivers, and human geography. Park’s observations added evidence about the Niger and the interior of West Africa.
René Caillié: A French explorer who reached Timbuktu in 1828 and returned to Europe alive. Caillié’s journey contrasted with Park’s fatal second expedition and produced another account of inland West Africa.
