Muon neutrino

The muon neutrino is an electrically neutral elementary particle in the second lepton family. It participates in weak interactions and is paired with the muon.

Weak interaction: A fundamental interaction responsible for processes such as beta decay and neutrino interactions. Muon neutrinos interact with matter through this force.
Muon: An elementary charged lepton with a mass about 207 times the electron's. It is the charged partner that defines the muon-neutrino family.
Cowan–Reines neutrino experiment: A 1956 experiment that detected electron antineutrinos from a nuclear reactor. It established neutrino detection before experiments identified the muon neutrino.
Neutrino detector: An instrument that observes neutrinos indirectly through particles or light produced in their interactions. Muon tracks and interaction patterns reveal muon-neutrino events.
Neutrino mass ordering: The unresolved arrangement of the three neutrino mass states, either normal or inverted. Muon-neutrino oscillation measurements help determine which mass state is heaviest.
Neutrino oscillation: The change of a neutrino's flavor as it propagates because its mass states evolve differently. A muon neutrino can later be detected as an electron or tau neutrino.
Lepton: A family of elementary fermions that includes electrons, muons, tau particles, and neutrinos. Muon neutrinos belong to this family of matter particles.
Brookhaven National Laboratory: A United States research laboratory where the 1962 experiment demonstrating the muon neutrino was conducted. Its Alternating Gradient Synchrotron supplied the neutrino beam used in the discovery.
Long-baseline neutrino experiment: An experiment that sends a neutrino beam over a long distance to study oscillations and interactions. Muon-neutrino beams provide a starting flavor for measuring disappearance and appearance.
CP violation in neutrinos: A possible difference between neutrino and antineutrino oscillation probabilities under charge-parity transformation. Comparing muon-neutrino and antineutrino beams tests this asymmetry.
