Murad I

Murad I was Ottoman sultan from 1362 to 1389. He expanded Ottoman rule into the Balkans and died after the Ottoman victory at the Battle of Kosovo.

Ottoman conquest of the Balkans: The expansion of Ottoman political and military control across southeastern Europe from the fourteenth century onward. Murad’s campaigns opened a sustained phase of Ottoman expansion across the peninsula.
Ottoman akıncı: Irregular Ottoman frontier cavalry known for raiding and reconnaissance in border regions. These forces helped make rapid incursions into Balkan territory possible.
Bayezid I: Ottoman sultan from 1389 to 1402, known for rapid expansion and defeat by Timur at Ankara. Murad’s son succeeded him immediately after the Battle of Kosovo.
Ottoman dynasty: The ruling house that governed the Ottoman state and empire from its emergence in the late thirteenth century until 1922. Murad inherited its nascent Anatolian principality and made it a stronger regional power.
Battle of Maritsa: A 1371 Ottoman victory over Serbian forces near the Maritsa River in southeastern Europe. This victory weakened regional resistance and helped open the way for further Ottoman advances.
Battle of Kosovo: A 1389 battle between Ottoman forces and a Balkan coalition, ending in heavy losses for both sides and the deaths of both rulers. Murad died during this battle, a pivotal encounter in his Balkan campaigns.
Janissaries: Elite Ottoman infantry recruited through the devşirme system and organized as a standing corps. Their early formation under Murad strengthened the sultan’s household military forces.
Orhan: The second ruler of the Ottoman dynasty, who expanded its territory in northwestern Anatolia and took Bursa. As Murad’s father, Orhan established the state and institutions Murad inherited.
Osman I: The founder of the Ottoman dynasty, who ruled a frontier principality in northwestern Anatolia around the turn of the fourteenth century. The dynastic state Osman founded was the political inheritance behind Murad’s reign.
Ottoman conquest of Adrianople: The Ottoman capture of Adrianople, a major city in Thrace that became a principal Ottoman center in Europe. Control of Adrianople gave Murad’s government a strategic base for Balkan campaigns.
