Knowra Murray–Darling Basin Murray–Darling Basin Australia’s largest river system drains much of the southeast into the Murray River. Its rivers, wetlands, and floodplains support major agricultural regions and diverse ecosystems.
Murray River : Australia’s longest river, flowing westward through southeastern Australia to the Southern Ocean. The basin’s principal river gathers water from its southern catchments.
Water allocation : The process of assigning available water among users, environments, and other purposes. Basin plans divide scarce flows among irrigation, communities, and river ecosystems.
Irrigation : The artificial application of water to land to support plant growth. Irrigation diverts basin water to crops and pastures, especially in dry regions.
Millennium Drought : A prolonged drought across southeastern Australia, especially severe from the late 1990s through 2009. It exposed the basin’s vulnerability to extended low inflows and intensified water disputes.
Lake Eyre Basin : A large inland drainage basin in central Australia whose rivers flow toward Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre. Unlike the Murray–Darling, it is an arid, internally draining system without an ocean outlet.
Darling River : A major Australian river formed by the confluence of the Culgoa and Barwon rivers, joining the Murray at Wentworth. Its tributaries drain much of the basin’s northern and western reaches.
Environmental flows : Managed water releases or protected river flows intended to sustain aquatic ecosystems and ecological processes. Flow targets aim to restore habitats and ecological functions altered by extraction.
Riverina wine region : A major wine-producing region in southwestern New South Wales, centered around Griffith and the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. Its vineyards depend on irrigation supplied by basin rivers and infrastructure.
Murray–Darling Basin Plan : A 2012 Australian framework for managing basin water resources and returning water to the environment. The plan sets limits and recovery targets for water extraction across the basin.
Great Artesian Basin : A vast underground sedimentary basin that stores groundwater beneath parts of eastern Australia. It is an aquifer system, not a surface river basin, though it overlaps parts of the region.
