Musa al-Kazim

Musa al-Kazim was the seventh Imam in Twelver and Ismaʿili Shia Islam. A descendant of Muhammad, he lived from 745 to 799.

Ja'far al-Sadiq: Ja'far al-Sadiq was the sixth Imam in Twelver and Ismaʿili Shia Islam and Musa al-Kazim's father. His designation of Musa as successor became disputed after his death.
Imamate in Shia Islam: Imamate in Shia Islam is the doctrine that divinely guided leaders from Muhammad's family hold religious authority. Musa's status and succession are understood through this doctrine.

Ja'fari jurisprudence: Ja'fari jurisprudence is the legal tradition associated with the teachings of Ja'far al-Sadiq and later Shia scholars. Musa's teaching and authority belong to the formative history of this tradition.
Twelver Imams: The Twelver Imams are the twelve spiritual leaders recognized in Twelver Shia Islam. Musa is remembered within this sequence as its seventh Imam.
Ahl al-Bayt: Ahl al-Bayt is the Arabic name for the household of Muhammad, whose membership and religious status are interpreted differently across Islam. Musa's descent from Muhammad places him within the household central to Shia devotion.
Harun al-Rashid: Harun al-Rashid was an Abbasid caliph who ruled from 786 to 809. Musa's final imprisonment and death occurred under Harun's rule.
Isma'ilism: Isma'ilism is a branch of Shia Islam whose Imams trace succession through Isma'il ibn Ja'far. Its account of succession differs from the line that recognizes Musa.
