Musa ibn Nusayr

Musa ibn Nusayr was an Umayyad governor and commander who consolidated Muslim rule across much of the Maghreb and helped direct the conquest of Iberia in the early eighth century.

Umayyad conquest of Hispania: The early eighth-century campaign that brought most of the Iberian Peninsula under Muslim rule. Musa reinforced the invasion launched by his subordinate Tariq ibn Ziyad and later joined the campaign.
Ifriqiya: A historical region of North Africa centered on present-day Tunisia and adjoining areas. Musa governed Ifriqiya, the eastern base from which his authority extended westward.
Uqba ibn Nafi: An Arab commander associated with the early Umayyad expansion into North Africa and the founding of Kairouan. Musa inherited a frontier shaped by Uqba’s earlier campaigns and the settlement at Kairouan.
Al-Andalus: The territories of the Iberian Peninsula governed by Muslim dynasties from the eighth century onward. Musa’s expedition helped establish the Muslim-ruled polity later known as al-Andalus.
Tariq ibn Ziyad: A Berber commander who led the initial Umayyad invasion of Iberia in 711. Musa appointed Tariq to lead the crossing from North Africa into Iberia.
Umayyad Caliphate: The Islamic caliphate ruled by the Umayyad dynasty from 661 to 750. Musa exercised provincial power as an official of this expanding empire.
Hasan ibn al-Nu'man: An Umayyad commander who led campaigns in North Africa in the late seventh and early eighth centuries. Hasan’s campaigns preceded Musa’s governorship and the final defeat of Byzantine power in the region.
Islamization of the Maghreb: The gradual spread of Islam among North African populations and institutions. Musa’s rule followed military expansion while North African communities adopted Islam over time.
Battle of Guadalete: A battle in 711 in which an invading Muslim army defeated the Visigothic king Roderic’s forces. The victory opened the way for the rapid expansion Musa later joined.
Al-Walid I: The Umayyad caliph who ruled from 705 to 715 during the conquests of Iberia and Central Asia. Musa governed under al-Walid and was recalled to the caliphal court near the end of his reign.
