Muscle biopsy

A procedure that removes a small sample of muscle tissue for microscopic and laboratory examination. It helps identify muscle diseases and distinguish them from disorders affecting nerves or other tissues.

Open muscle biopsy: A biopsy method that removes muscle tissue through a small surgical incision. It provides a larger specimen when detailed structural analysis is needed.
Muscular dystrophy: A group of inherited disorders that cause progressive muscle weakness and degeneration. Biopsy can reveal degeneration, regeneration, and protein abnormalities associated with some forms.
Skeletal muscle: Striated muscle attached to the skeleton that produces voluntary movement and helps maintain posture. Muscle biopsy samples this tissue type for structural and laboratory study.
Nerve biopsy: A procedure that removes a small sample of nerve tissue for microscopic and laboratory examination. It investigates peripheral nerve disease rather than abnormalities centered in muscle.
Dystrophin: A protein that stabilizes muscle fibers by linking their internal cytoskeleton to the surrounding cell membrane complex. Staining for dystrophin can reveal protein loss in certain muscular dystrophies.
Needle muscle biopsy: A biopsy method that extracts muscle tissue through a hollow needle inserted into the muscle. It samples muscle with a smaller incision than an open procedure.
Inflammatory myopathy: A group of disorders in which inflammation damages skeletal muscle and causes weakness. The specimen can show inflammation and help distinguish types of muscle involvement.
Muscle fiber: A single elongated, multinucleated cell that contracts to generate skeletal muscle force. Fiber size, shape, and internal features are central to microscopic interpretation.
Muscle ultrasound: An imaging method that uses sound waves to assess muscle structure and movement. It offers noninvasive assessment but does not provide tissue for laboratory analysis.
Muscle fiber type grouping: A biopsy pattern in which neighboring muscle fibers share the same contractile fiber type. The pattern can indicate chronic loss and reinnervation of muscle fibers.
