Muscular system

The body system of skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles that produces movement, maintains posture, and generates heat.

Muscle contraction: The process by which muscle fibers develop tension, often while shortening. It is the central process that lets muscles move the body and produce heat.
Skeletal muscle: Striated muscle usually attached to bones and generally controlled voluntarily. It drives most deliberate body movement and helps maintain posture.
Strength training: Exercise that challenges muscles to increase strength, power, or size. It uses repeated muscle loading to build force-producing capacity.
Skeletal system: The body's framework of bones, cartilage, and associated connective tissues. Bones provide the levers and attachment points through which skeletal muscles move the body.
Sliding filament theory: The model explaining contraction as thin actin filaments sliding past thick myosin filaments. It explains how skeletal and cardiac muscle fibers generate force.
Smooth muscle: Involuntary, nonstriated muscle found in the walls of organs and blood vessels. It moves materials through organs and regulates the diameter of vessels.
Muscle hypertrophy: An increase in the size of muscle fibers, commonly following sustained resistance training. It is one adaptation through which skeletal muscles respond to training.
Nervous system: The network of neurons and supporting cells that senses, processes, and coordinates information. Nerve signals control skeletal muscle contraction and regulate many involuntary muscle actions.
Neuromuscular junction: The synapse where a motor neuron signals a skeletal muscle fiber to contract. It is where voluntary motor commands reach skeletal muscles.
Cardiac muscle: The specialized striated muscle tissue that forms the heart wall. Its rhythmic contractions pump blood through the body.
