Musical acoustics

Musical acoustics studies how musical sounds are produced, transmitted, and perceived, including sound from instruments and the acoustics of performance spaces.

Harmonic series: A sequence of frequencies that are integer multiples of a fundamental frequency. Its frequency structure helps explain the timbre of many musical tones.
Sound pressure level: A logarithmic measure of sound pressure relative to a reference pressure, expressed in decibels. It quantifies the level of musical sound in instruments and venues.
Musical instrument: A device designed to produce musical sound through vibration or electronic signal generation. Instrument acoustics examines how these devices turn energy into controllable musical tones.
Architectural acoustics: The design and analysis of sound in buildings, including rooms for speech and music. It overlaps with musical acoustics where buildings shape performance sound.

Ernst Chladni: A German physicist who demonstrated vibration patterns on plates using sand. His experiments made vibrating surfaces visible and measurable.
