Musical notation

Musical notation uses written symbols to represent music, including pitch, rhythm, structure, and performance instructions. Its conventions let performers interpret and preserve musical works.

Musical staff: A set of horizontal lines and spaces on which musical notes are written. The staff provides the vertical positions used to encode pitch.
Time signature: A notation symbol indicating how beats are grouped into measures and which note value receives a beat. It organizes written durations into recurring metric groups.
Tablature: A notation system that indicates instrument positions or fingerings rather than representing pitches on a staff. Guitar tablature offers a practical alternative to conventional staff notation.
Neume: A sign used in medieval chant notation to indicate melodic gestures. Neumes document an early stage in Western written music.
Oral tradition: The transmission of knowledge and practices through spoken or performed communication across generations. Oral transmission can preserve music without relying on a written score.
Clef: A symbol that assigns specific pitches to the lines and spaces of a musical staff. Clefs determine how staff positions translate into note names.
Bar line: A vertical line that separates measures in written music. Bar lines make the time signature’s recurring groups visible.
Lead sheet: A compact musical score showing a melody, lyrics when present, and chord symbols. Lead sheets reduce notation to essentials for flexible performance.
Guido of Arezzo: An eleventh-century music theorist associated with innovations in staff notation and solmization. His teaching methods helped make written pitches easier to identify.
Music improvisation: The creation or shaping of music during performance rather than solely from predetermined material. Improvisation tests how much a score fixes versus leaves open.
