Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj

Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj was a ninth-century hadith scholar from Nishapur who compiled Sahih Muslim, one of Sunni Islam’s principal collections of prophetic reports.

Hadith: Reports describing the words, actions, and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad. These reports were the material Muslim collected and evaluated.
Sahih Muslim: A collection of hadith compiled by Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj and regarded as authoritative in Sunni Islam. This is the work for which Muslim is principally known.
Muhammad al-Bukhari: A ninth-century hadith scholar who compiled Sahih al-Bukhari. Muslim studied with al-Bukhari, and their collections became paired authorities.
Abbasid Caliphate: A caliphate that ruled much of the Islamic world from 750 to 1258. Muslim’s career unfolded during its ninth-century period of scholarly growth.
Al-Muwatta: A legal and hadith work compiled by Malik ibn Anas in the eighth century. It combines prophetic reports with early legal practice, unlike Muslim’s focused collection.

Ahmad ibn Hanbal: A ninth-century Muslim jurist and hadith scholar, and the eponym of the Hanbali school. His generation’s hadith scholarship shaped the intellectual world Muslim entered.
Islamic Golden Age: A broad period of flourishing intellectual activity across parts of the medieval Islamic world. Hadith compilation developed amid the era’s vigorous scholarly exchange.
Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal: A large hadith collection arranged by the names of the report’s Companion transmitters. Its organizing principle differs from the topical presentation associated with Sahih Muslim.
