The period when Muslim powers ruled much of Sicily, beginning with the ninth-century conquest and ending with the Norman conquest completed in 1091.

Arab–Byzantine wars: A series of conflicts between Arab-led Muslim states and the Byzantine Empire from the seventh through eleventh centuries. The conquest of Sicily formed one front in this wider struggle with Byzantium.
Emirate of Sicily: A Muslim polity governing much of Sicily from the ninth century until Norman conquest in 1091. It was the island's principal political framework during Muslim rule.

Kalbid dynasty: A dynasty of governors and emirs that ruled Sicily under Fatimid suzerainty from 948 to 1053. The Kalbids made the Sicilian emirate increasingly autonomous.
Jaʿfar ibn Muhammad: A Kalbid emir of Sicily who ruled from 983 to 985. His reign belongs to the emirate's period of political consolidation.
Siculo-Arabic: The Arabic variety spoken in medieval Sicily, from which Maltese ultimately developed. Its survival beyond Muslim rule shows the conquest's lasting linguistic imprint.
Zisa: A palace built outside Palermo under Norman kings in the twelfth century, drawing on Islamic architectural forms. It shows how architectural traditions associated with Muslim Sicily continued after the conquest.
