Mustafa I

Mustafa I was Ottoman sultan from 1617 to 1618 and again from 1622 to 1623. His reigns were interrupted by deposition and shaped by court factionalism and questions about his capacity to rule.

Ahmed I: Ottoman sultan from 1603 to 1617 and Mustafa I’s brother. Ahmed’s death in 1617 brought Mustafa to the throne instead of Ahmed’s eldest son.
Janissaries: Elite infantry soldiers who served the Ottoman sultan and became influential in imperial politics. Janissary support helped restore Mustafa after Osman II’s overthrow.
