Mutagenesis

Mutagenesis is the generation of changes in genetic material through spontaneous or induced mutations. It can alter DNA sequence or chromosome structure.

DNA damage: Physical or chemical alteration of DNA that can interfere with replication or gene expression. Many induced mutations begin as lesions that escape accurate repair.
Mutation: A heritable change in an organism’s genetic material. Mutagenesis describes the processes that generate these genetic changes.
Directed evolution: A laboratory method that iteratively generates and selects variants with desired properties. Mutagenesis supplies genetic diversity for selection of improved proteins or organisms.
Recombination: The exchange or rearrangement of genetic material between DNA molecules or chromosome regions. It reshuffles existing sequence combinations rather than necessarily creating new mutations.
Spontaneous mutation: A mutation arising without deliberate exposure to a mutagenic agent. It captures changes generated by endogenous chemistry and ordinary cellular processes.
DNA repair: Cellular pathways that detect and correct damage or errors in DNA. Repair can prevent mutagenesis or, when error-prone, introduce mutations.
Gene: A DNA sequence that contributes to a functional product or regulated activity. Mutations within genes can alter their products or expression.
Site-directed mutagenesis: A laboratory technique for introducing a chosen change at a specific DNA site. It tests how particular sequence changes affect gene or protein function.
Horizontal gene transfer: The movement of genetic material between organisms outside parent-to-offspring inheritance. It changes a genome by acquisition, not by generating a new mutation in place.
Induced mutation: A mutation caused by exposure to a mutagenic agent or experimental treatment. It is the deliberately or environmentally triggered counterpart to spontaneous mutation.
