Mutapa Empire

The Mutapa Empire was a Shona-led kingdom in southeastern Africa, centered in present-day Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It flourished from the fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries and controlled trade in gold and other goods.

Mutapa kingship: The hereditary political institution through which Mutapa rulers governed territory, collected tribute, and directed diplomacy. The king’s authority linked local chiefs and provinces to the imperial center.
Shona peoples: A group of Bantu-speaking peoples whose communities have long inhabited parts of present-day Zimbabwe and neighboring countries. Mutapa rulers and much of the kingdom’s population belonged to Shona-speaking communities.
Mavura Mhande Felipe: A seventeenth-century Mutapa ruler who accepted Portuguese support and was baptized as Felipe. His alliance with Portugal illustrates the pressures surrounding royal succession and sovereignty.
Rozvi Empire: A Shona-led state that rose in the Zimbabwe plateau during the seventeenth century and later challenged regional rivals. Rozvi expansion became a major force in the decline of Mutapa influence.

Great Zimbabwe: A medieval stone-walled city in present-day Zimbabwe that served as a major political and trading center. Mutapa emerged after Great Zimbabwe’s prominence declined, within a connected plateau political world.
Gonçalo da Silveira: A Portuguese Jesuit missionary who traveled to the Mutapa court in the sixteenth century. His mission reflected Portuguese efforts to gain religious and political influence at court.
Barwe Kingdom: A kingdom in the lower Zambezi region that emerged amid political changes connected with Mutapa authority. Its rulers contested power in territories once linked to Mutapa’s northern domains.
Chikanga: A Mutapa ruler associated with Portuguese intervention in the kingdom during the late sixteenth century. His reign illustrates how Portuguese forces influenced disputes over the throne.
