Muzzle velocity

Muzzle velocity is the speed of a projectile as it exits a firearm’s muzzle. It depends on the firearm, ammunition, barrel, and environmental conditions.

Internal ballistics: The study of a projectile’s motion inside a firearm, from ignition until it exits the muzzle. It describes the processes that generate muzzle velocity.
External ballistics: The study of a projectile’s flight after it leaves the firearm. Muzzle velocity is a key starting value for predicting flight.
Terminal velocity: The constant speed an object approaches when drag balances the force driving its motion. Unlike muzzle velocity, it describes a speed reached during motion through a resisting medium.
Kinetic energy: The energy an object possesses because of its motion. Muzzle energy follows from the projectile’s mass and muzzle velocity.
Propellant: A combustible material that produces expanding gas to propel a projectile. Its combustion creates the pressure that accelerates the projectile.
Ballistic trajectory: The curved path followed by a projectile under gravity and aerodynamic forces. Muzzle velocity helps determine the projectile’s initial speed and resulting path.
Velocity: A vector quantity describing an object’s rate and direction of motion. Muzzle velocity is a specific measurement of a projectile’s velocity at the muzzle.
Momentum: A vector quantity equal to an object’s mass multiplied by its velocity. Projectile momentum links muzzle speed and mass to recoil calculations.
Chamber pressure: The pressure exerted by expanding propellant gases inside a firearm’s chamber and bore. Pressure drives the projectile forward, but excessive pressure can damage the firearm.
Muzzle energy: The kinetic energy of a projectile as it exits a firearm’s muzzle. It is calculated from muzzle velocity and projectile mass.
