Knowra Mycenae Mycenae Mycenae was a fortified Bronze Age city in the northeastern Peloponnese and a major center of Mycenaean civilization. Its ruins and later stories made it a lasting symbol of Greece’s legendary heroic age.
Mycenaean Greece : A Late Bronze Age civilization centered on mainland Greece, known for palatial centers, Linear B writing, and extensive trade. Mycenae was one of this civilization’s principal political and cultural centers.
Heinrich Schliemann : A nineteenth-century German archaeologist whose excavations brought major Bronze Age sites, including Mycenae, to public attention. His 1870s excavations uncovered Grave Circle A and shaped early interpretations of the site.

Grave Circle B : A Mycenaean burial enclosure outside the citadel containing shaft graves dating mainly to the seventeenth century BCE. Its earlier burials help trace Mycenae’s development before the later royal grave circle.
Treasury of Atreus : A monumental Mycenaean tholos tomb near the citadel, built with a corbelled stone dome. Its scale demonstrates the resources commanded by Mycenae’s elite.
Trojan War : A legendary conflict between Greeks and Troy, narrated in ancient Greek epic and associated with possible Bronze Age memories. Mycenae’s traditional kingship links the city to the expedition against Troy.
Cyclopean masonry : A style of construction using enormous, roughly fitted stone blocks, especially associated with Mycenaean fortifications. Its massive walls define Mycenae’s citadel and inspired later legends about giants.
Mycenaean palace period : The Late Bronze Age era when palace centers governed much of mainland Greece, approximately 1400–1200 BCE. Mycenae reached its greatest political prominence during this era.
