Mycology

Mycology is the branch of biology concerned with fungi, including their classification, structure, genetics, ecology, and uses.

Fungi: Fungi are eukaryotic organisms that absorb nutrients and include yeasts, molds, and mushrooms. The kingdom whose diversity and biology form mycology’s subject.
Fungal reproduction: Fungal reproduction produces new individuals through sexual or asexual processes, often involving spores. Reproductive cycles generate the spores used to identify and study fungi.
Medical mycology: Medical mycology studies fungal diseases in humans and their diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. It applies fungal biology to infections and clinical care.
Decomposition: Decomposition is the breakdown of organic matter into simpler substances, driven largely by microbes and detritivores. Fungal decay returns nutrients from dead material to ecosystems.
Pier Antonio Micheli: Pier Antonio Micheli was an Italian botanist whose 1729 work documented fungal reproduction and diversity. His observations helped establish systematic study of fungi.
Hypha: A hypha is a threadlike fungal filament that grows at its tip and often branches. Hyphae are the basic growth units of many fungi.
Fungal spores: Fungal spores are reproductive or dispersal cells that can develop into new fungal growth. Spore formation and dispersal are recurring subjects in fungal biology.
Mycotoxin: A mycotoxin is a toxic compound produced by certain fungi that can contaminate food or feed. Fungal chemistry creates hazards that mycologists monitor in crops and stored foods.
Plant pathology: Plant pathology studies diseases in plants and the organisms and conditions that cause them. Fungal pathogens account for many destructive plant diseases.
Elias Magnus Fries: Elias Magnus Fries was a Swedish mycologist known for influential classifications of fungi. His taxonomic works shaped nineteenth-century fungal classification.
