Myotendinous junction

The specialized interface where a skeletal muscle fiber attaches to a tendon and transmits contractile force. Its folded membranes and linked proteins distribute mechanical stress across the attachment.

Costamere: A protein assembly that links the muscle-cell cytoskeleton to the sarcolemma and extracellular matrix. Costameres connect force-bearing structures inside muscle fibers to the membrane near the attachment.
Skeletal muscle: Striated muscle attached to the skeleton and usually controlled voluntarily. Its fibers generate the contraction that the junction transfers into tendon.
Muscle strain: An injury caused by overstretching or tearing muscle tissue and, sometimes, its connective attachments. Strains near the muscle–tendon boundary can involve the junction and adjacent tissues.
Mechanotransduction: The conversion of mechanical stimuli into biochemical signals within cells. Mechanical strain at the junction may alter cellular signaling and tissue adaptation.
Integrin: A transmembrane receptor that links extracellular matrix proteins to intracellular cytoskeletal and signaling systems. Integrins help anchor muscle-cell structures to the matrix at the muscle–tendon interface.
Tendon: A dense connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone or other structures and transmits force. The junction terminates in tendon, whose collagen-rich tissue carries muscle force onward.
Tendon injury: Damage to tendon tissue caused by acute loading, repetitive stress, or impaired repair. Junctional loading connects tendon injury mechanics to the adjoining muscle attachment.
Muscle–tendon unit: The functional assembly of muscle, tendon, and their connecting tissues that produces and transmits movement forces. Junction behavior depends on how the entire connected unit shares load.
Dystrophin: A cytoskeletal protein that connects actin to a membrane protein complex in muscle cells. Its membrane-stabilizing role complements the force-transmission links at the junction.
Muscle fiber: A single elongated, multinucleated cell that contracts as part of skeletal muscle. The muscle fiber’s membrane forms the cellular side of the attachment.
