Myrmecophagy

Myrmecophagy is the specialized feeding on ants, termites, or both. It has evolved independently in several animal lineages, often alongside adaptations for locating and extracting social insects.

Tongue elongation: The lengthening of an animal's tongue, which can extend its reach when capturing prey. Long, often adhesive tongues draw ants and termites from narrow nests and galleries.
Ant: A social insect in the family Formicidae, characterized by elbowed antennae and a narrow waist. Ants are one of the two principal prey groups in myrmecophagy.
Giant anteater: A large Central and South American mammal that feeds mainly on ants and termites. Its elongated snout, long tongue, and powerful claws exemplify mammalian myrmecophagy.
Convergent evolution: The independent evolution of similar traits in different lineages, often under similar selective pressures. Distantly related myrmecophages independently evolved traits for finding and consuming social insects.

Aardvark: An African mammal that digs into ant and termite nests and captures insects with a long tongue. It evolved a termite-focused feeding strategy independently of anteaters.
Evolutionary adaptation: A heritable trait that improves an organism's survival or reproduction in a particular environment. Specialized feeding traits can be favored where ants or termites provide reliable food.
