Naha

Naha is the capital of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, on the southern coast of Okinawa Island. It is the prefecture’s largest city and a gateway to the Ryukyu Islands.

Shuri Castle: A former royal castle of the Ryukyu Kingdom in Shuri, now part of Naha. Its palace complex was the kingdom’s political center before becoming part of the modern city.
Ryukyu Kingdom: An independent kingdom centered on Okinawa that lasted from the fifteenth century until its annexation by Japan in 1879. Naha developed as the kingdom’s principal port and administrative center.
Naha Airport: The principal airport serving Naha and Okinawa Prefecture. It links the city with mainland Japan and other Okinawan islands.
Battle of Okinawa: A major 1945 battle between Allied and Japanese forces that devastated Okinawa and caused extensive civilian deaths. Fighting and bombardment destroyed much of Naha and its historic fabric.
Kokusai-dori: A major shopping and entertainment street in central Naha. Its postwar growth earned it the nickname “Miracle Mile.”
Shuri: A district of Naha that served as the capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The royal court made Shuri the political heart above the port city.
Naha Port: A major port in Naha serving passenger ferries, cargo, and cruise ships. Its routes make the city a maritime gateway to nearby islands.
United States Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands: The United States administration that governed the Ryukyu Islands from 1950 to 1972. Its rule shaped Naha’s reconstruction and civic life after the war.
Naminoue Shrine: A Shinto shrine on a cliff above the coast of Naha. It is one of Okinawa’s best-known shrines and a landmark beside the city’s port.
Ryukyu–China relations: Diplomatic and tributary relations between the Ryukyu Kingdom and successive Chinese dynasties. Chinese exchange helped shape the kingdom’s trade and court culture in Naha.
