Naïve art

Naïve art is a visual style marked by simplified forms, vivid color, and limited use of conventional perspective, often made by self-taught artists.

Linear perspective: A system for depicting three-dimensional space on a flat surface through converging lines and measured proportions. Naïve art often departs from its rules, producing flattened or inconsistent space.
Henri Rousseau: A French painter whose dreamlike jungle scenes and flattened forms became central examples of modern naïve art. His carefully composed scenes show how apparent simplicity can coexist with deliberate design.
Art brut: An art category coined by Jean Dubuffet for work made outside established cultural and academic conventions. Its debates about outsider status overlap with, but do not define, naïve art.
Self-taught artist: An artist who develops artistic practice without formal instruction in art schools or equivalent programs. The term describes a training history, not a single visual style or level of skill.

Art criticism: The analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of artworks and artistic practices. Critical language has shaped whether naïve art is treated as deficient, intentional, or distinctive.
Color field: An area of a composition dominated by a particular color or a closely related range of colors. Broad, vivid color areas often organize naïve compositions more than tonal modeling does.
Séraphine Louis: A French painter known for densely patterned floral works made outside formal art training. Her ornamental surfaces reveal a visionary direction distinct from narrative folk scenes.
