Namdev

Namdev was a medieval Indian poet-saint whose devotional songs shaped the Varkari tradition and were later included in the Sikh scripture Guru Granth Sahib.

Bhakti movement: A broad movement of devotional Hindu traditions that emphasized personal devotion to a deity. Namdev’s poetry belongs to the wider devotional movement that reshaped religious life across India.
Kirtan: A form of devotional singing in which sacred names or verses are sung, often responsively. Kirtan provided a communal setting for circulating Namdev’s devotional compositions.
Maharashtra: A state in western India with a long Marathi-speaking cultural and literary history. Namdev’s life and devotional legacy are rooted in Maharashtra’s medieval religious culture.
Guru Arjan: The fifth Sikh Guru, who compiled the Adi Granth, the predecessor of the Guru Granth Sahib. His compilation brought hymns attributed to Namdev into the Sikh scriptural canon.
Varkari: A Marathi devotional tradition centered on pilgrimage to Vithoba’s temple at Pandharpur. Namdev became one of the tradition’s most influential poet-saints.

Dnyaneshwar: A thirteenth-century Marathi poet-saint and philosopher associated with the Varkari tradition. Tradition places Dnyaneshwar and Namdev among the formative figures of early Varkari devotion.
Adi Granth: The Sikh scripture compiled in 1604 and later expanded into the Guru Granth Sahib. Its inclusion of Namdev’s hymns gave his poetry a place in Sikh worship and scripture.
Vithoba: A form of Krishna or Vishnu worshipped especially at Pandharpur in Maharashtra. Vithoba is the central deity addressed in much of Namdev’s devotional poetry.
Wari: The annual Varkari pilgrimage on foot to Pandharpur, especially for the Ashadhi Ekadashi festival. The pilgrimage sustains the devotional community in which Namdev’s songs are sung.
