Nameplate capacity

Nameplate capacity is the maximum output or rating a facility or piece of equipment is designed to provide, as stated by its manufacturer or operator.

Capacity factor: The ratio of an energy facility’s actual output over time to its maximum possible output over that period. It compares realized generation with the maximum implied by a facility’s nameplate rating.
Installed capacity: The combined rated capacity of equipment or facilities installed within a system or region. Energy statistics often aggregate power-plant nameplate ratings as installed capacity.
Rated power: The power level a device or system is specified to deliver under defined operating conditions. Equipment nameplates commonly state a rated power that supplies the capacity figure.
Resource adequacy: The ability of an electricity system to supply demand reliably across expected operating conditions. Planners cannot equate aggregate nameplate capacity with the capacity reliably available during scarcity.
Effective load carrying capability: A measure of how much additional electric load a resource can serve while maintaining a chosen reliability level. It measures dependable contribution to the grid rather than the full nameplate rating.
Power plant: An industrial facility that converts energy sources into electricity for delivery to an electrical grid or local users. Its nameplate capacity states the maximum rated electrical output of its generating units.
Peak load: The highest rate of demand placed on a system during a specified period. Comparing peak demand with nameplate capacity reveals whether rated supply can meet the maximum load.
Capacity planning: The process of determining how much infrastructure or production capability a system needs over time. Nameplate ratings provide an initial inventory for planning, usually followed by availability adjustments.
Derating: The reduction of equipment’s rated capacity to reflect operating conditions, degradation, or reliability limits. Derating adjusts the stated maximum when equipment cannot safely or reliably deliver it.
Data center power capacity: The maximum electrical load a data center’s infrastructure is designed to support. Facility ratings can describe the designed power supply, though IT demand may be lower.
