Nanboku-chō period

A period of Japanese history from 1336 to 1392, when rival Northern and Southern imperial courts competed for control of the country.

Northern Court: The imperial court based in Kyoto that competed with the Southern Court during the Nanboku-chō period. Its emperors held Kyoto and received Ashikaga military support.
Kenmu Restoration: Emperor Go-Daigo's brief restoration of direct imperial government in Japan from 1333 to 1336. Its failure drove Go-Daigo into conflict with Ashikaga Takauji.
Battle of Minatogawa: A 1336 battle in which Ashikaga Takauji's forces defeated those loyal to Emperor Go-Daigo near present-day Kobe. The defeat drove Go-Daigo from Kyoto and accelerated the court split.
Muromachi period: A period of Japanese history from 1336 to 1573, dominated by the Ashikaga shogunate based in Kyoto. Its starting date coincides with the rise of Ashikaga rule during the court conflict.
Southern Court: The imperial court established by Emperor Go-Daigo after he rejected the authority of the Northern Court. It claimed the legitimate imperial succession while operating from Yoshino.
Genkō War: The 1331–1333 uprising that overthrew the Kamakura shogunate and restored Emperor Go-Daigo to power. Its victory created the political opening for the restoration that preceded the court split.
Battle of Shijōnawate: A 1348 battle in which the Northern Court's forces defeated the Southern Court's army near present-day Osaka. The Southern Court lost its base at Yoshino after this major setback.
Kamakura-fu: The Ashikaga-led regional government established in Kamakura to govern eastern Japan during the Muromachi period. Its creation extended Ashikaga rule beyond Kyoto amid continuing regional loyalties.
Ashikaga shogunate: The military government founded by Ashikaga Takauji, which ruled Japan from Kyoto from 1336 to 1573. Its support sustained the Northern Court and shaped the conflict's military balance.
Kamakura shogunate: Japan's first military government, ruled by the Minamoto and later the Hōjō regents from 1185 to 1333. Its fall left unresolved who would control the military government and imperial authority.
