Nanga Parbat

Nanga Parbat is an 8,126-meter peak in Pakistan’s western Himalayas and the world’s ninth-highest mountain. Its steep relief and severe weather have made it one of mountaineering’s most demanding peaks.

Rakhiot Face: The northeast face of Nanga Parbat, climbed on the first successful ascent in 1953. This was the route Hermann Buhl followed to reach the summit.
Himalayas: A mountain range in Asia containing Earth’s highest peaks. Nanga Parbat is the westernmost major eight-thousander in this range.
Indian Plate: A tectonic plate whose collision with Eurasia helped raise the Himalayas. Its ongoing convergence contributes to the region’s mountain building.

Eight-thousanders: The fourteen mountains higher than 8,000 meters above sea level. Nanga Parbat is one of fourteen peaks whose ascents define extreme high-altitude mountaineering.
Rupal Face: The southern face of Nanga Parbat, rising roughly 4,600 meters from its base. Its enormous vertical wall is the mountain’s most striking climbing challenge.
Altitude sickness: A set of illnesses caused by inadequate acclimatization to high altitude. Climbers face reduced oxygen pressure during prolonged travel above 8,000 meters.
