Nanjing decade

The period from 1927 to 1937 when the Nationalist government ruled China from Nanjing, marked by state-building, economic growth, political repression, and continuing conflict.

Nationalist government: The Chinese government led by the Kuomintang from 1927 until its defeat by the Communists in 1949. It was the central government whose rule defined the decade.
Northern Expedition: A Kuomintang-led military campaign from 1926 to 1928 to defeat regional warlords and unify China. Its victories enabled the Nationalists to establish a government in Nanjing.
Chinese industrialization: The growth of modern manufacturing and infrastructure in China, especially in coastal cities during the early twentieth century. Industrial expansion accelerated under Nationalist rule, though unevenly and under threat from war.
Chinese Communist Party: A political party founded in 1921 that led the Chinese Communist Revolution and has governed mainland China since 1949. Its survival and growth challenged the Nationalists’ claim to govern a unified China.
Kuomintang: A Chinese political party founded by Sun Yat-sen that led the Republic of China for much of the twentieth century. The party supplied the government, political program, and leadership in Nanjing.
Shanghai massacre: The violent suppression of Communists and labor activists in Shanghai by Nationalist forces on April 12, 1927. The purge broke the Nationalists’ alliance with the Communists before Nanjing rule began.
Chinese nationalism: Political movements that sought Chinese sovereignty, unity, and national strength amid foreign intervention and internal division. Nationalist state-building drew on these goals but struggled to achieve broad unity.
Yan'an Soviet: A Communist base area in Shaanxi established in 1935 and led by Mao Zedong until 1947. It became the Communists’ rival political center after their retreat from Nationalist campaigns.
Chiang Kai-shek: A Chinese military and political leader who headed the Kuomintang government for much of 1928–1949. His leadership shaped the decade’s centralizing policies and military campaigns.
Wuhan Nationalist government: A rival Kuomintang government based in Wuhan in 1927, led by Wang Jingwei and allied with the Communists. Its split with Chiang Kai-shek’s faction preceded the consolidation of the Nanjing government.
