Napoleon Bonaparte

Napoleon Bonaparte was a French military leader who became emperor and reshaped European politics through conquest, state reforms, and law.

Josephine de Beauharnais: A French empress who married Napoleon in 1796 and remained his wife until their divorce in 1810. Their marriage joined Napoleon’s political ascent to a prominent French family.
Italian campaign of 1796–1797: A French military campaign in which Napoleon won victories against Austrian and Italian forces. Its successes made him a celebrated commander and independent political figure.
Napoleonic Code: The French civil code promulgated in 1804, which consolidated laws and affirmed civil equality for men. It carried parts of the Revolution into a durable legal system under Napoleon.
French Revolution: A period of political and social upheaval in France from 1789 to 1799 that ended the monarchy and transformed the state. It dismantled the old order and opened paths to power for ambitious officers.
Congress of Vienna: A 1814–1815 diplomatic congress that reorganized Europe after the Napoleonic Wars. The powers sought to contain the upheavals and territorial changes Napoleon had produced.
Napoleon II: The son of Napoleon Bonaparte and Marie Louise, briefly recognized as emperor in 1815. His disputed succession exposed the fragility of Napoleon’s restored dynasty.
Egyptian campaign: A French expedition to Egypt from 1798 to 1801, led initially by Napoleon Bonaparte. It mixed strategic ambitions against Britain with military failure and scientific inquiry.
Concordat of 1801: An agreement between Napoleon’s government and Pope Pius VII that regulated relations with the Catholic Church in France. It restored public religious practice while keeping the church under state influence.
Siege of Toulon: A 1793 siege in which French republican forces recaptured Toulon from royalist and allied troops. Napoleon’s artillery role brought him promotion and early military recognition.
Hundred Days: Napoleon’s brief return to power in France from March to July 1815. His comeback forced Europe’s powers to mobilize again and ended at Waterloo.
