Napoleonic era

The period of European history shaped by Napoleon Bonaparte’s rise, French rule over much of the continent, and widespread wars, ending with his defeat at Waterloo in 1815.

18 Brumaire: The coup of 9–10 November 1799 that overthrew France’s Directory and brought Napoleon Bonaparte to power. This coup began Napoleon’s political rule and the era’s central sequence of events.
Napoleonic Code: The French civil code promulgated in 1804, establishing legal principles such as civil equality and protection of property. The code standardized law in France and influenced legal systems across territories under French rule.
French Revolution: The 1789–1799 revolution that ended the French monarchy, transformed political institutions, and reshaped ideas of citizenship. Its upheavals created the political opening through which Napoleon rose.
Congress System: A series of diplomatic congresses through which European powers attempted to preserve the post-1815 settlement. It extended the Vienna settlement into a cooperative system for managing European crises.
British Empire: The expanding empire of territories and commercial influence ruled or controlled by Britain. Britain remained Napoleon’s chief maritime rival and resisted his continental embargo.
Napoleonic Wars: A series of conflicts from 1803 to 1815 between Napoleonic France and shifting coalitions of European powers. These wars carried French power across Europe and ultimately brought Napoleon down.
Prefect: A senior government official who administers a French department on behalf of the central state. Prefects extended centralized government into the departments governed by Napoleon.
Directory (France): The five-member executive government that ruled France from 1795 until Napoleon’s coup in 1799. Its instability and dependence on military power preceded the 18 Brumaire coup.
Concert of Europe: The cooperation among major European powers after 1815 to preserve peace and the established political order. The wars’ aftermath encouraged powers to coordinate against renewed upheaval.
Holy Roman Empire: A multi-state polity in central Europe that existed from the Middle Ages until its dissolution in 1806. Napoleon’s victories and reorganization ended this centuries-old imperial framework.
