Naqsh-e Jahan Square

A monumental public square in Isfahan, Iran, laid out under Safavid ruler Shah Abbas I in the early 17th century. Its four sides are framed by major royal, religious, and commercial buildings.

Shah Mosque: A Safavid congregational mosque on the southern side of Naqsh-e Jahan Square, now commonly called the Imam Mosque. Its monumental entrance and dome form the square’s southern architectural anchor.
Chovgan: A traditional Iranian equestrian team sport played with mallets and a ball, known elsewhere as polo. The square’s open ground accommodated royal chovgan matches.
Isfahan: A major city in central Iran and the former capital of the Safavid Empire. The square became the ceremonial and urban center of the Safavid capital.
UNESCO World Heritage Site: A cultural or natural property inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List for its outstanding universal value. Naqsh-e Jahan Square is protected within the UNESCO listing for Meidan Emam, Isfahan.
Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque: A Safavid mosque on the eastern side of Naqsh-e Jahan Square, built for the royal court. Its richly tiled dome faces the square opposite the Ali Qapu palace.
Safavid Empire: An Iranian dynasty and empire that ruled from 1501 to 1736 and established Twelver Shiism as the state religion. The square concentrated the empire’s political, religious, and commercial authority.
Shah Abbas I: The Safavid ruler who reigned from 1588 to 1629 and made Isfahan his capital. He directed Isfahan’s expansion and commissioned the square’s major buildings.
Iranian cultural heritage: The inherited monuments, practices, and places that carry historical significance in Iran. The square is among Iran’s most prominent surviving Safavid civic ensembles.
Ali Qapu: A Safavid palace and ceremonial pavilion on the western side of Naqsh-e Jahan Square. Its elevated terrace gave rulers a direct view over ceremonies and polo matches.
Isfahan Grand Bazaar: A historic covered marketplace in Isfahan, linked to Naqsh-e Jahan Square through the Qeysarie Gate. Merchants and shoppers brought the city’s commercial life directly to the square.
