Naqshbandiyya

The Naqshbandiyya is a major Sunni Sufi order whose traditions emphasize silent remembrance of God and a spiritual lineage associated with Baha-ud-Din Naqshband.

Dhikr: Islamic remembrance of God through repeated invocation, prayer, or attentive recollection. The order’s silent practices belong to this wider tradition of remembrance.
Baha-ud-Din Naqshband: A fourteenth-century Central Asian Sufi master associated with the formation and naming of the Naqshbandiyya. The order takes its name from him and centers its lineage on his teaching.
Sufi lodge: A residence or gathering place where Sufis meet for worship, instruction, and communal life. Naqshbandi communities have used lodges to transmit practice and sustain fellowship.
Qadiriyya: A major Sufi order tracing its lineage to Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani. Its devotional customs and historical networks offer a comparison with Naqshbandi practice.

Abd al-Khaliq Ghijduwani: A Central Asian Sufi master traditionally counted among the formative teachers of the Naqshbandi lineage. The order’s lineage links Naqshband to earlier Khwajagan teachings associated with Ghijduwani.
Rabita: A Sufi practice of cultivating a spiritual connection with a teacher or guide. Some Naqshbandi lineages use this bond as part of spiritual instruction.
Chishtiyya: A major Sufi order that developed in South Asia and is associated with devotional gatherings and music in many lineages. Its public devotional styles contrast with the Naqshbandiyya’s characteristic preference for silent dhikr.
Muraqaba: A Sufi practice of attentive spiritual watchfulness and contemplation. Naqshbandi training uses focused inward attention alongside remembrance.
Khwajagan: A Central Asian Sufi tradition of masters that preceded and shaped the Naqshbandiyya. Its teachings and lineage supplied foundations for the later order.
