Nara period

A period of Japanese history from 710 to 794, when the imperial capital was established at Heijō-kyō, present-day Nara.

Heijō-kyō: The planned capital of Japan from 710 to 784, located in present-day Nara. Its grid plan and court precinct made the new capital a visible center of imperial rule.
Fujiwara-kyō: The Japanese capital near present-day Kashihara, used from 694 to 710 before the move to Heijō-kyō. The move from Fujiwara-kyō marks the opening of the period and a new capital plan.
Emperor Shōmu: A Japanese sovereign who ruled from 724 to 749 and promoted Buddhism through major temple projects. His sponsorship of Tōdai-ji and the Great Buddha epitomized state-supported Buddhism.
Tōdai-ji: A Buddhist temple complex in Nara, founded under imperial patronage and home to the Great Buddha. Its scale made the temple a lasting emblem of state-sponsored Buddhism.

Great Buddha of Nara: A monumental bronze statue of Vairocana Buddha housed in Tōdai-ji's Great Buddha Hall. Its creation mobilized resources and labor across the realm under Emperor Shōmu.
Tōdai-ji Great Buddha Hall: The main hall of Tōdai-ji, built to enshrine the Great Buddha and repeatedly reconstructed after destruction. Its later rebuilding carried a Nara imperial project into subsequent eras.
