Narmada River

The Narmada is a major west-flowing river in central India, rising in the Maikal Range and emptying into the Gulf of Khambhat in the Arabian Sea.

Narmada Rift Valley: A structural depression between the Vindhya and Satpura ranges that carries the Narmada westward. The river follows this fault-bounded valley for much of its middle course.
Narmada Valley Development Project: A multipurpose program of dams, canals, and related works across the Narmada basin. It coordinates large-scale storage, irrigation, drinking-water supply, and power generation.
Vindhya Range: A discontinuous range of hills and plateaus extending across central India. The Narmada runs along the range’s southern edge through much of its course.
Sardar Sarovar Project: A major multipurpose dam and canal project on the lower Narmada in Gujarat. Its construction became a national debate over development, displacement, and environmental costs.

Satpura Range: A range of hills extending across central India south of the Narmada valley. Its northern slopes form the river valley’s southern boundary.
Narmada Valley Project displacement: The relocation of communities affected by dams and reservoirs in the Narmada basin. Reservoir submergence and resettlement became central disputes surrounding river development.
Tawa River: A major tributary of the Narmada in Madhya Pradesh. Its confluence adds substantial flow to the Narmada upstream of the Sardar Sarovar Dam.
Narmada Canal: A canal network carrying water from the Sardar Sarovar reservoir across Gujarat and toward Rajasthan. It transfers Narmada water to regions beyond the river’s natural valley.
