Narrative nonfiction

Narrative nonfiction presents factual material through storytelling techniques such as scenes, characters, and plot while remaining grounded in verifiable events.

Narrative: A representation of connected events arranged into a story. Narrative nonfiction borrows this structure to organize real events.
Fiction: Prose or other storytelling that presents invented events or people. Both forms use plot and scenes, but fiction may invent its subject matter.
The New Journalism: A 1960s and 1970s style of journalism that applied literary techniques to reported events. Its writers made immersive storytelling a conspicuous mode of nonfiction reporting.
Truth in nonfiction: The standards by which nonfiction represents events, evidence, and uncertainty truthfully. Narrative force cannot settle what the available evidence supports.
Truman Capote: An American author whose 1966 book In Cold Blood became a landmark of narrative nonfiction. His book brought national attention to the possibilities and factual disputes of the form.
Scene: A focused unit of storytelling that presents events unfolding in a particular time and place. Scenes let nonfiction render documented events with immediacy.
Expository writing: Writing that explains or informs through organized presentation of facts and ideas. It usually prioritizes direct explanation over unfolding scenes.
In Cold Blood: Truman Capote's 1966 account of the Clutter family murders and their aftermath. The book became a landmark example of a crime account shaped as a narrative.
Journalistic ethics: Principles governing accuracy, fairness, independence, and harm in journalism. These principles constrain scene construction and the treatment of real subjects.
John Hersey: An American journalist and novelist who wrote the 1946 book Hiroshima. His account used the experiences of six survivors to narrate the bombing's human consequences.
