Narrative time

Narrative time is the relation between the duration and order of events in a story and the duration and order of their presentation.

Story time: The duration and sequence of events within the world of a story. It is the event-side of the relation that narrative time compares with presentation.
Analepsis: A narrative presentation of an event that occurred before the current point in the story. A flashback makes presentation order diverge from event chronology.
In Search of Lost Time: Marcel Proust's novel sequence exploring memory, time, art, and social life. Its extended recollections and reflections complicate the relation between lived and narrated duration.
Chronology: The arrangement of events according to the times at which they occurred. Chronology orders events without accounting for how a narrative presents them.
Discourse time: The duration and sequence through which a narrative presents its events. It names the presentation-side of narrative time.
Prolepsis: A narrative presentation of an event that occurs later than the current point in the story. A flash-forward presents a future event ahead of its chronological place.
Mrs Dalloway: Virginia Woolf's novel following Clarissa Dalloway through a single day in London. Its shifting consciousness links clock time to expansive recollection.
Storytelling: The act or practice of communicating a sequence of events as a story. Narrative time concerns temporal relations within this broader practice.
Narrative discourse: The organization and presentation of a story through a particular narrative form. Narrative time is one dimension of how discourse presents a story.
Ellipsis (narratology): A narrative omission of a span of story time from the presentation. Omission compresses elapsed story time into no narrated duration.
